Straight answer

Is Tailored
paint protection
film any good?

Short version: yes, and here's the honest detail — what it's made of, how it performs, what the warranty actually covers, and the situations where you should buy something else. If your installer just quoted you Tailored film and you're checking us out before saying yes, this page is written for you.

Who we are, briefly

Tailored is a film manufacturer's brand run by paint protection film and window film installers — people who have spent years on a bench wrapping cars, trucks, motorcycles, RVs, boats, buildings and aircraft.

That matters more than it sounds. Most film brands are built by chemical companies or marketing companies. The specification decisions — how thick, how tacky the adhesive, how aggressive the topcoat, how much stretch before the film remembers its shape — get made by people who have never had to finish a bumper at 7pm with a customer waiting. Ours get made by people who have.

We have partnered with one of the largest film manufacturers in the world to produce our line to our specification. We don't publish the partner's name, and you should be skeptical of any film brand that tells you it manufactures its own film unless it owns a coating line. Almost none of them do. What separates films is the specification, the quality control, and who stands behind the warranty.

What the film actually is

Our flagship, Tailored FORM-Gloss, is an 8.5 mil aliphatic thermoplastic polyurethane with a self-healing elastomeric topcoat. Three parts of that sentence matter to you:

  • Aliphatic TPU — not aromatic TPU, not TPH, not PVC. Aliphatic polyurethane is the chemistry that resists yellowing under UV. Cheaper films use aromatic TPU or hybrid TPH, and they go amber on a hood over a few Utah summers.
  • 8.5 mil — the thickness of the film stack. This is the standard gauge for premium PPF. Thinner films install faster and cost less, and they also absorb less of a rock strike. We sell a thinner 7.5 mil option too, and we're upfront about what it is.
  • Self-healing topcoat — light swirl marks and fine scratches close up with heat. Ambient sun on a warm day does it. Warm water does it faster. This is not magic and it does not repair a deep gouge that reached the film's base layer.

How it performs

Rock chips

This is the job. An 8.5 mil urethane layer between highway gravel and your clear coat absorbs impacts that would otherwise chip paint. It is not bulletproof — a hard strike at speed can still mark the film, and occasionally still reach paint. What it reliably prevents is the constant accumulation of small chips across a hood and front bumper that makes a three-year-old car look like a six-year-old car.

Staining and yellowing

Bug guts, bird droppings and tree sap are acidic and will etch an unprotected clear coat. Our topcoat resists them, and the aliphatic base resists UV yellowing. The honest caveat: nothing is stain-proof if it sits long enough. Bird droppings left on a hot panel for a week in July will mark almost any film on the market. Wash the car.

Optical clarity

Good film disappears. On a solid color you should not be able to see where the film ends without looking for the edge. On metallics and deep blacks, look at the panel in direct sun from a low angle — that's where poor film shows orange peel or haze.

Where Tailored is not the right choice

The part most brand pages leave out

We'd rather you buy the right thing than buy ours. Three situations where we're honestly not the best answer.

  • You want the name on the window sticker. If you're going to sell the car to a brand-conscious buyer and want documented XPEL on the invoice, buy XPEL. Brand recognition has real resale value in some circles and we're the newer name.
  • You have an exotic or brand-new model and want a pre-cut pattern. The largest pattern libraries belong to the incumbents. A skilled installer can hand-cut any vehicle — that's how it was done for twenty years — but if your installer depends on plotter patterns for a rare car, ask them directly before booking.
  • You're shopping purely on price. There is cheaper film. It's usually TPH or aromatic TPU, and it usually looks fine for eighteen months. If the quote you have is significantly below others, ask what film it is and what the warranty covers.

The warranty, in plain terms

Ten years on our flagship paint protection film, covering yellowing, cracking, bubbling and delamination — plus the labor to replace the affected panels at your installer's posted rate. It's registered against your VIN at install, so there's nothing for you to file or keep track of.

The process matters as much as the coverage. Your installer sends us photos, the VIN and the install date. We approve or deny within three business days and ship replacement film at no cost on approved claims. You are not asked to prove anything to a manufacturer in another state while your car sits.

What it doesn't cover: impact damage, improper care, damage from pressure washing at close range on an edge, and anything caused by the film being removed and reinstalled. The full warranty document is here — read it before you buy, not after.

How to check out the shop, not just the film

The uncomfortable truth of this industry: installer skill matters more than film brand. A great installer with mid-tier film will beat a mediocre installer with the most expensive film on the market, every time.

Before you book, ask the shop:

  1. Can I see a car you finished, in person, in daylight?
  2. Do you wrap edges or relief-cut them? (Wrapped edges are harder and look better.)
  3. Who does the install — you, or someone else in the shop?
  4. What's your process if I find a lifted edge in two weeks?
  5. Is the car washed and decontaminated before film goes on, and where does it cure?

A shop that answers those five questions comfortably is a shop worth booking. If you were quoted Tailored film, that shop is an authorized dealer — they bought it from us directly, we know who they are, and we trained them on the product.

Common questions

How long does it last?

Our flagship film is warrantied for ten years. Real-world life depends heavily on climate and care — a garaged car in a mild climate can look excellent past a decade, while a truck that lives outside in high-altitude Utah sun works the film harder. Front-end film also takes physical abuse that roof and door film doesn't.

Will it damage my paint when it's removed?

On factory paint in good condition, no. Film is removed with heat and comes off cleanly. The risk is on repainted panels — aftermarket paint that wasn't properly cured or prepped can lift. Tell your installer about any repainted panels before the job starts.

Can I wash it normally?

Yes, after the initial cure period your installer specifies. Avoid holding a pressure washer close to an edge, and skip automatic washes with hard brushes. Hand wash is best, as it is for the paint underneath.

PPF or ceramic coating?

They solve different problems. Film stops physical damage; coating makes the surface easier to clean and adds gloss. Many owners do both — film on the front end, coating over the whole car. A coating alone will not stop a rock chip.

Do you sell directly to me?

No. Tailored sells only to licensed professional shops. If you'd like our film on your vehicle, we'll connect you with an authorized dealer near you.

Still have questions?

Come straight to the manufacturer. We'll tell you honestly what our film will and won't do, then point you at an authorized dealer in your area.
