Tailored / Tailored vs XPEL

Honest comparison

Tailored
vs XPEL.

XPEL is the biggest name in paint protection film and it earned that position. We're going to tell you exactly where they beat us, exactly where we beat them, and how to decide — because a comparison page that claims a clean sweep is worthless to you and you already know it.

The short version

The performance gap between top-tier films has narrowed to the point where installer skill matters more than brand. What separates the two of us is not really the film — it's the ecosystem, the cost structure, and how much of your business you're willing to tie to one supplier.

  • Choose XPEL if brand recognition has value to your customers, you need the deepest pre-cut pattern library for exotic or brand-new vehicles, or you want the largest certified network for warranty service across the country.
  • Choose Tailored if you want lower landed cost per foot, no monthly software subscription, a specialty film range that goes well past cars, or film specified to your climate and your installers rather than one formula for everyone.

Where XPEL genuinely wins

The pattern library

This is the real moat, and pretending otherwise would insult you. XPEL's Design Access Program holds well over ten thousand vehicle-specific templates with the fastest turnaround in the industry on newly released models — often within days of a car hitting the market. Two decades of measuring cars produced that, and nobody catches up quickly.

If your shop's throughput depends on plotter-cut patterns for a wide range of vehicles including exotics, that library is worth paying for. Be honest with yourself about whether it is: a shop cutting the same fifteen trucks and Teslas every week gets far less value from ten thousand patterns than a shop in a market full of Ferraris.

Brand recognition

Some customers walk in asking for XPEL by name. In markets where resale to brand-conscious buyers matters, a documented XPEL install can command a premium. We're the newer name and we're not going to argue that away — we're going to earn it, and in the meantime we'd rather you know the tradeoff.

Network coverage for traveling customers

A customer who relocates or drives cross-country has an easier time finding an XPEL shop to handle a warranty issue. Our network is growing. Today, theirs is bigger.

Where Tailored genuinely wins

Cost structure, not just film price

Compare the whole cost of running the brand, not the per-foot number. A pattern software subscription is a fixed monthly cost that arrives whether you cut ten cars or one. Our dealers pay no software subscription, get published tier pricing they can see before opening an account, and can buy partial rolls down to five feet instead of eating a full roll for a single hood.

Run your own numbers

Our job margin calculator lets you enter your film cost, waste percentage, bench hours and shop rate to see what a job actually clears. Compare that against your current supplier honestly — including software and minimum order costs — before you decide either way.

No lock-in

Pattern software tied to a single film brand means the software decides what film you can sell. If you want to offer a customer a budget option and a flagship option from different manufacturers, a locked ecosystem prevents it. Nothing about buying Tailored stops you from also stocking something else, and we won't pull your pricing for it.

Film specified to you

Our manufacturing partnership lets qualifying dealers specify film to their conditions — adhesive tack for their install environment, topcoat aggressiveness for showroom cars versus vehicles that live outside, gauge for their typical work. A shop wrapping side-by-sides in southern Utah does not need the same film as a shop wrapping garaged exotics in Seattle. Nobody else offers this to a shop of your size.

Work beyond cars

Countertop, appliance, windshield, marine and screen protection film — the high-ticket, low-effort jobs that fill a bay between vehicles. Most film brands are automotive-only. Our dealers can quote a kitchen or a boat on the same account, from the same rep, and those jobs frequently carry better margin per hour than a full front.

How to decide

High volume

15+ cars a week

Pattern accuracy compounds into real labor savings at this volume. Price the software subscription against your actual trimming time. If patterns save you two hours a day, they pay for themselves — and you should probably run both brands rather than choosing.

Mid volume

5–15 cars a week

This is where our economics are strongest. The fixed software cost hurts most at this volume, and experienced installers can hand-cut efficiently. The savings go straight to your bottom line.

Adding film

New or expanding

Lower barrier to entry, no minimum order, hands-on training on your bench, and a specialty range that lets you take work your competitors turn down. Start here, and switch later if you outgrow us.

Try both

The most useful thing we can tell you: don't decide from a comparison table, including this one. Order a partial roll, put it on a real car alongside what you run now, and judge stretch, tack, edge behavior and finish yourself.

We'll send a sample pack free with your pricing, and there's no minimum order and nothing to sign. If our film doesn't handle the way you want on your bench, you've lost an afternoon and learned something. That's a fair trade and we're comfortable making that offer because we know how the film performs.

See the numbers yourself.

Published tier pricing, a free sample pack, and a rep who will answer honestly about where we fit and where we don't.
